ABOUT OUR COACHES
Everett Sloan - Owner
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” are the wise words of Confucius that Everett has held close to him. Growing up, he was an active individual wielding his father’s concrete-filled Weider weights in his basement growing up. Once he hit college, he demonstrated a keen interest in bodybuilding and pursued that avenue for a couple of years and it led to a great modeling carrer. wHen he abandoned bodybuilding and moved on to compete in local power lifting and strongman competitions, but that was short-lived as he didn't like the toll it took on his body. for years after that he trained without real direction or purpose in globo gyms.
In 2005 Everett was involved in a severe motorcycle accident and was told he would not be able to walk again. Refusing to quit, he started moving around in his wheelchair in the hospital corridors for exercise. He defied the odds and would soon be back in the gym after finishing up with his physiotherapy.
One of the major challenges that Everett faced was limitation with his body movement. While relearning movements and finding ways to adapt he turned to the web where he discovered CrossFit. Starting by incorporating some of the CrossFit methodologies in his workout at the local Globo Gym, it then escalated to turning his garage into a gym where he and several friends trained. Everett finally bit the bullet in 2010 and joined a box; it was there he had the opportunity to compete in the CrossFit Canada East Regionals, which further inspired him. From that moment he discovered CrossFit, it has evolved into a passion, one that he has decided to share with his members.

Dan Shrum - Head Coach
Dan has always had a passion for exercise. Years of competitive hockey helped him realize the importance of health and fitness and his passion for helping others led him to a career in personal training. Dan has been working as a personal trainer for four years and has had the opportunity to work with clients of various backgrounds and understands that individuals have different needs, goals, and interests. There is no obstacle Dan is not ready to overcome and he has helped many clients reach their potential. He is committed to educating, inspiring, and helping people reach their health and fitness goals.
Dan first learned about CrossFit from a co-worker at a globo gym and immediately fell in love with it! CrossFit’s emphasis on all-around athleticism (strength, flexibility, endurance, focus, etc.) was directly in line with his pre-existing health and fitness values and the community was extremely welcoming. He found the conditioning to be challenging and the workouts were not only strenuous, but they required significant mental focus. CrossFit makes it very easy to track improvement; whether it is by big leaps or small increments, which helps keep motivation high. The variety in the workouts ensures that it is always fun and keeps the body guessing! These aspects are all related to what Dan was already doing with his personal training clients and transitioning into CrossFit was seamless. Dan is now actively competing in CrossFit competitions and is always working on beating himself (and Everett!).

Erin Vanasse - Part Time Coach
Erin is one of 3 triplets from Western Quebec. Growing up with 2 identical sisters, she became very competitive. She competed in figure skating until the age of 16. Always interested in fitness yet never quite able to find her niche, she jumped around between running, yoga, snowboarding and mountain biking.
In the summer of 2012 her powerlifting sister Gracie and brother in-law AJ Roberts, former Westside Barbell World Record Holder, were invited to present at the CrossFit Games in Carson, California. They came back with a new view of fitness and convinced Erin to give CrossFit a try. Since picking up her first Barbell in July 2012, she has competed in numerous CrossFit competitions at an Rx level and has ran a half marathon. 6 months into CrossFit she competed in her first Sanctioned Olympic Weightlifting meet, lifting a 128kg (281 lbs) total, which qualified her for the Ontario Senior Weightlifting Championships!
She attended the CrossFit Level 1 Seminar later that year. This was a major eye-opening experience for her, she then realized this would not just be another fitness fad for her but rather a lifestyle change. Erin has fallen in love with every aspect of the sport, from the camaraderie between the athletes to the importance of functional movement. She has had the opportunity to work with expert coaches such as Laura Phelps (Current All-Time Powerlifting World Record Holder), Shane Sweatt, AJ Roberts and Daniel Robitaille (Former National Olympic Weightlifting Coach).
Erin works full-time with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada supporting the Deputy Minister. She understands the importance of finding balance between training and everyday life yet knows how challenging this can sometimes be. She is very excited to be a part of CrossFit Bytown!

Heath Graham - Yoga Instructor
Heath's first memory's of having an interest in Yoga happened approximately at the age of 4. He was watching tv when he witnessed a yogi preforming Asanas and Kriyas . He would then attempt to duplicate these postures. At that time it was much easier having the natural suppleness of a child. Today he is not so supple. But continues to work on it.
He grew up playing hockey, rugby and almost every other sport going , also dabbled with various martial arts along the way.
Heath attended his first Hatha 200 hrs yoga teacher training in 2003 with Yogi Vishvketu (Vishva-ji) and Chétana Panwar at the Upward Dog yoga center. After this he followed up his yoga practice with different workshops. Heath most recently completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training at the Upward Dog yoga center with Roxanne Jolly and Mike Dyne. He attended this training after his return from the Dagobah system. Where he trained with Master Yoda for many years.
Yoga has been the prefect compliment for his life. It has helped to balance out the everyday stresses of life and allowed him to lead an active adventurous life.
JF Proulx - General Manager & Part Owner
"If you have a question a proper squat is probably the answer "
JF discovered crossfit in 2012 at crossfit Trois-Rivieres and it was a life changing experience . JF is always up to date on the comings and goings of the crossfit community as he has travelled through different countries experiencing all that the community has to offer, as well as getting ideas on how to improve the member experience at Bytown . As a kid he was always involved in many sports playing high school basketball and hockey as well as participating in martial arts . Since arriving at Bytown, JF has passed his level 1 and spent time learning to coach from Everett and Dan, focusing his attention on new members. Through continuous improvement from the crossfit.com website he has continued to acquire the skills to coach, and you can always count on him to ensure the basic movements of crossfit are taught in an encouraging manner.

Karine Shrum - Foundations Coach
Her athletic background has been cultivated from childhood where she was involved in hockey and competitive soccer; with the latter had her playing at the provincial, national and international levels ultimately being scouted for Team Ontario at the age of 18. A back injury changed the course of her athletic career; Karine turned to the bodybuilding world to fulfill her athletic drive. Having been mentored by the best in that field, Karine gained unparalleled insight and experience in the sport from physique to training to diets. Again, her athletic career was sidetracked, this time by her brother Dan, who introduced her to CrossFit. All it took was her first WOD for her to fall in love with the competitiveness, the skill and the community that is so heavily associated with CrossFit. Her introduction to CrossFit began at Bytown, where she is now both part of the competitive team and a coach.
Her competitive team background along with her love for the active lifestyle has fueled her in sparking that level of passion from her clients when she was a trainer at Goodlife Fitness and now from the athletes at Bytown. As a Shrum she is often found at the gym, patiently coaching, suffering thorough Dan’s workouts or even worse his monologues and making gnarly workouts look good.
Taylor Stewart - Part time Coach
A family outing to the cinema ended in tragedy for young Taylor Stewart. Walking homeward, Bruce, his father, Thomas, and mother, Martha, accidentally ventured into Gotham City's notorious "Crime Alley" and were accosted by a mugger. Not content merely to rob the wealthy family, the hoodlum - whose identity was "never determined" - shot Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne dead before fleeing into the darkness. As he knelt beside his parent's bodies, Taylor swore to avenge them. After the police arrived, Taylor was comforted by Dr. Leslie Thompkins. Dr. Thompkins and Alfred Pennyworth helped arrange matters so that Gotham's Social Services would not take Taylor into care. In this way, both Dr. Thompkins and Alfred enabled Taylor to realize his dream of becoming a crusader against crime.
Livia Pellerin - Fascia Therapist
This ain't no candles and soft music. I love fixing joint and mobility problems! If you've messed yourself up and things just aren't like they used to be, there's nothing better than some deep and painful, elbow deeper than you think it can go, fascia work.
I've been dancing since I was 3 and worked as an international professional dancer for over 10 years. I even danced in corporate shows with Cirque du Soleil. While I have experience with aerial silks, break dancing and capoeira, I wasn't crazy enough to join their team, but I do know that when you push your body that hard, some upkeep is a must.
Injury, mobility and joint problems were a fact of life for me. I did everything I could to keep my body going, but when I found myself waking up in pain on such a regular basis, I knew I had to find a way to make things right. Fortunately I found Structural Integration and after my first treatment my hips felt like they were in the right place for the first time. My cardio increased and my movements became less painful. After 7 sessions I was amazed to know what it was finally like to be pain free. I knew I had to do this. So I packed up my daughter and we moved to Hawaii and then Colorado so I could complete the certification.
Knees and ankles have been my thing but I'm developing a new fetish for hips! If you're blowing your WOD cuz your mobility sucks and your coach says your snatch is nasty, I'm your girl!
But seriously, check out this link for information on Structural Integration, better known as Rolfing, developed by Ida Rolf, a biochemist from New York, in the 1930s. It's a discipline that uses movement re-patterning and deep tissue work to restore proper functional mobility in the body.
Whether you're looking for a quick fix on a particular joint or you want to get your body back in balance to pre-injury status (and I'm talking ALL your injuries), Structural Integration can help you.
