Food on the ketogenic diet can seem limited. In the beginning all the eggs, cheese, meat, bacon, and butters seems awesome. After awhile, unless you are creative, it can seem repetitive. Luckily I married a great cook, so my suppers are always delicious. Snacks have always been a bit of an issue, especially when travelling. Normally I either didn’t eat, or looked for some nuts and jerky at a convenience store.
I have tried the “low carb” bars such as Quest bars. They have never reacted well to me for multiple reasons. They taste too good to be true, so I normally end up eating too many of them. When that happens, the high fibre content tends to wreak havoc on my stomach. I have also found that despite having very low “net carbs”, they still raised my blood sugar and stimulated my appetite more than they should. Recent research has shown that many ingredients such as tapioca starch and maltitol, which do not have to be listed as carbs, or are allowed to be listed as fibre, act as sugars in the body.
Someone passed along the contact info of a local startup company, PowerHouse Superfoods. They make a bar called KetoLUXE. These are 100% natural, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and soy free. Despite all these restrictions, they taste AMAZING. Per bar, they contain: 300 calories, 25g of fat, 8g of carbs (3.5 net carbs), 13.5g of fibre.
They have a several week shelf life, despite having no preservatives. These can be used to help up your fat intake, as a snack, or a keto friendly dessert.
If you are interested in trying them, there are some for sale in the fridge at Bytown (if I haven’t eaten them all), or you can order your own supply by emailing Julia at email@example.com
Before trying my first bar I was expected the typical fat bomb treat, after tasting it, i strongly debated experimenting trying to discover what the LD-50 (lethal dose) of these awesome treats were. Only way to describe it was chocolate covered fatty marshmallow of goodness.
Yours in health,
