We, the CrossFit Bytown coaching staff, are very excited to award our September 2017 Member of the Month to Brie Dobs. Brie has been putting a lot of good time at the box going back-to-back with evening Crossfit and weightlifting classes. She has been working around some old injuries she has had before joining Crossfit but still continues to push, improve, and learn.

Why did you choose Crossfit?
A couple of years ago I went to a Crossfit competition to watch my friend compete and I thought it looked like a lot of fun. I really wanted to do it, but did not think I would be able to handle it. My friend who is super athletic and who constantly refers to me as Hex on account of my terrible luck told me I could not do Crossfit because I would either break a bone or set the place on fire. The more he told me I could not do it, the more determined I was to join a box. So after doing some research and emailing Everett, on July 12 2016, I walked into Bytown and told the Shrum’s I was starting Foundations. Fast forward to almost a year later, and my friend came to join me for a Saturday partner WOD for my birthday. His assessment, “you’re not terrible”. #winnerwinner

Why did you choose our gym?
When I googled Crossfit gyms in Ottawa, Bytown was the first to pop up. I asked my friend (not the jerk referenced above) who goes to Tidal in Burlington if she knew anything about Bytown and she said she had heard good things about it. As a result, I hopped on OC transpo and made my way into Hintonburg.

What are your goals?
I would really like to get a pull up. I’m not fussy, kipping or strict will do. 
A muscle up would be nice
A handstand press
Kicking Taylor’s ass in a game of bowling. Wait, check that off the list. Witnesses include Karine and Mitch.

What do you do for a living and hobbies?
I work for the Correctional Service of Canada. I have been told that my work changes lives and protects Canadians. You’re welcome. 
I like to paint, write and read poetry. I also like to drink wine, eat Suzy Q doughtnuts and watch Netflix. I was a competitive dancer and acrobat from the age of 5-19, so I still keep up with the “dance world” and watch competitions. I also take some gymnastics classes at Alex Kazam’s.

What changes have you noticed?
I was diagnosed with a labral tear and femoroacetaubular impingement in my right hip shortly before I joined Bytown. I was constantly in discomfort and would frequently experience pain when the labrum in my hip would “catch”. A little over a year ago I was experiencing painful “catching” at least 5 times a day. Currently I do not experience any catching and cannot remember the last time I did. Dan Shrum and my sports medicine doctor said it is because I have managed to strengthen my muscles. 
The most important change I have noticed though is that I can now lift my own luggage into VIA rail and do not need to ask for assistance. 
What motivates you?
If you tell me I cannot do something, then I am going to want to prove you wrong. Unless you tell me that I cannot run a mile. If it involves running, I trust your judgement and will just eat some cookies or do some handstands instead.

Favourite WOD?
Any WOD that includes handstand walking and excludes snatching.

Advice to new members?
Never eat a Suzy Q doughnut right before a workout (Dobson, Brie)
Eating cookies after a workout will always make you feel better (Khazall, Rim)
It doesn’t hurt to run a little faster (Tanner, Nathan)
Forget about the math, just lift the weights (Muise, Rob)
Most importantly, say “hello” to others and introduce yourself. You will make lots of friends at Bytown.
