We, the CrossFit Bytown coaching staff, are very excited to award our August 2017 Member of the Month to Mitch Steele . Mitch is always friendly to everyone at CrossFit Bytown, and gives off a happy vibe. Mitch is one of the most consistent athletes we have, regardless of what late night shenanigans he may have participated in the night before. He is always in the gym on his scheduled training days. You can also find him constantly pushing himself and encouraging others.
Why did you choose Crossfit?
In the beginning I was fairly hesitant to start Crossfit. I had watched a few Crossfit fail videos online that had kind of given the sport a bad rep, making me hesitant to join a Crossfit box. Then I met this Crossfitter named Kaitlyn and she could squat, snatch, and clean more then I could at them time, so I thought maybe Crossfit has some merit to it. She got me to come out to some classes and the rest is history.
Why did you choose our gym?
The first time I ever visited Bytown was when I was visiting Ottawa for work while I was in my Masters. I had some down time for a couple of days and needed a place to work out in. My original plan was to check 3 or 4 gyms out in Ottawa. Bytown was my first stop and turns out my only one. Dan and obviously a shirtless Everett greeted me the first time I entered Bytown. They welcomed me into the gym and showed me what the Bytown life is all about community and having fun. So when I moved to Ottawa full time several months later Bytown was the gym I had to join.
What are your goals?
My Crossfit goals right now are just to continue improving my overall fitness, learning to enjoy my fitness journey, and to learn not to get discouraged when I have a bad day or week at the gym.
What do you do for a living, hobbies?
Right now I am working for Lululemon and enjoying my summer.
What change have you noticed?
The biggest changes I have noticed from first starting Crossfit is that my overall energy levels are way up, and I find it much easier to get up in the mornings. I have also loss a fairly significant amount of weight. When I first started I came in at 230lbs and now I sit at 203lbs. Surprisingly Crossfit has also helped me improve my mental toughness which has helped me in other aspects of my life.
What motivates you?
The biggest thing that motivates me is to just be better than I was yesterday.
My favorite WOD would have to be FRAN, she’s just one fine lady.
Advice to new members?
My advice to new members would be to never use the washroom after Dan. Never be afraid to ask the coaches questions if you’re unsure about a movement or what to do (Only ask Karine if she has had food in the past hour though). The biggest thing to always remember is to just have fun and don’t take it that seriously.
