We often hold up research papers as the gold standard. But things aren’t always as cut and dry as they might appear. Sometimes the research is flawed, sometimes the researchers are funded by someone wanting a particular outcome, sometimes its downright wrong. Alan Aragon has a great website dedicated to showing flaws in research papers and using language that people can understand. Sometimes the actual data is withheld from third parties, making it impossible to replicate and test the results. This is particularly disturbing, especially when this was recently discovered with papers published about the effectiveness of statins.
