Training vs. Testing: The Rule Book Changes When the Clock Starts

If you look at our workout prescriptions on any given day, you will see specific percentage ranges, RPE targets, time caps, and expected round counts. These aren’t random metrics—they are there to protect the intended training stimulus. But there is a silent distinction behind every single session that completely changes how you should approach the floor: Are you training, or are you testing?

Mixing these two up is one of the quickest ways to stall your progress, get frustrated, or wind up injured. Here is the breakdown of why everything changes—from your mindset to your pacing—and why the “rules” matter vastly more on some days than others.

The Fundamental Shift

To lay the groundwork for this, we need to throw out an old, flawed piece of advice. People love to say “practice makes perfect.” It doesn’t.

🧠 “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.”

Whatever you do repeatedly under the roof of this gym becomes your default setting. If you cut corners on your depth or move with sloppy technique every single day just to beat the clock, you are permanently cementing bad patterns into your central nervous system.

Here is how your strategy needs to split between the two mindsets:

Feature🏋️ Training Mode⏱️ Testing Mode
The Primary GoalStimulus, skill development, and building capacity.Seeing the raw results of your hard work.
The MindsetFocus on how the movement feels and keeping tension.Focus on execution, strategy, and pushing boundaries.
Pacing StrategyControlled, methodical, and strictly repeatable.Calculated pacing to maximize output right to the finish line.
Effort TypeTargeted, repeatable physical stress (e.g., 80% RPE).Maximum performance expression.

🏋️ In Training: The Rules Are Everything

When you are in a standard training phase—like our Monday or Friday strength pieces—the rules are absolute.

When we give you a prescriptive range like 78-84% of your test number, or specify an RPE of 7.5/10, those are the exact rules required to trigger the specific physical adaptation we want. The exact same logic applies to our metcons when we establish strict time caps and expected round ranges. We are giving you a blueprint to keep you in the proper energy system.

In training mode, checking your ego at the door is mandatory. Lowering the weight or slowing your pace to respect the time cap or hitting the target RPE is a massive win, because you are programming your body for long-term success.

⏱️ In Testing: The Rules Shift

Testing is your opportunity to cash in the chips you earned during training. It’s a benchmark day, a 1-Rep Max attempt, or a brutal Hero WOD like Omar or Ned.

When you are testing, your strategy completely changes. You aren’t trying to carefully regulate your RPE anymore; you are trying to move the load as efficiently as possible within the standards of the movement. You switch to survival pacing, tactical breaks, and redline effort. Minor technical breakdowns might happen when you are pushing your absolute limits—and on a true test day, that is an acceptable risk to see where your boundaries lie.

The Takeaway

You cannot test yourself every single day. If you try to turn every Wednesday morning AMRAP into an all-out, maximum-effort competitive battlefield, you completely miss the intended stimulus and your body will eventually break down.

Pay close attention to the targets, percentages, and caps in the workout prescription. When it’s time to train, follow those guidelines perfectly to make the right habits permanent. Then, when a test day finally rolls around, you’ll have a rock-solid foundation ready to absolutely smash your old records.
